UNDERSTANDING CAUSE, EFFECT & OUTCOME

The simplest way of looking at Cause, Effect & Outcome is to see Cause as a trigger of setting things in motion (Effect) which then creates a tangible result (Outcome). Basically, Cause is WHY something happens; Effect is WHAT happens; and Outcome is the RESULT of the why and what that happens.

Let’s take a look at a couple of scenarios.

Scenario 1 – You have a beach birthday party planned for Sunday evening. However, on the way to the beach, your car breaks down suddenly, and you have no other means of transport to get you there. You then have no choice but to cancel your beach birthday and return home disappointed.

Scenario 2 – You have a beach birthday party planned for Sunday evening. Everything goes well and you have an amazing party, returning home feeling satisfied.

In Scenario 1, the Cause is your car breaking down and the Effect of the breaking down of your car is the cancellation of the birthday party and the Outcome is that you are disappointed.

In Scenario 2, the Cause is everything going well according to plan; the Effect is you have an amazing birthday party and the Outcome is you feel satisfied.

You can’t have an Outcome without an Effect, and can’t have an Effect without having an Outcome. You can’t have an Effect without a Cause, and you can’t have a Cause without having an Effect. Cause, Effect and Outcome are intertwined and this intertwining often presents itself as a duality – meaning, it can be either good or bad; or it can be good and bad.

This becomes extremely tricky to unravel when it comes to relationships. Every relationship Outcome, and every Outcome within relationships is filled with multiple Causes and multiple Effects. At the same time, there could possibly even be a single Cause which leads to multiple Effects that combine to create a Cause for more Effects and multiple Outcomes!

If you know how to manage the Causes, you will be better able to harmonize the Effects. This way, you will be in full control, and your Outcomes will always be what you want them to be.
